Indian festivals are a celebration of relationships and play an integral part in building a stronger society, both socially and economically. Although a great many festivals are observed here in India, Raksha Bandhan stands out amongst all when it comes to simplicity and celebration. This day holds more importance socially than its religious significance. Raksha Bandhan is a day of brothers and sisters and their love and commitment to each other. Sisters tie a string of bonds called rakhi on the wrists of their brothers. That is to protect them from all kinds of adversities, and in return pray for their long life and well being. This adds another element to the Raksha Bandhan celebrations.
Raksha Bandhan festivities are celebrated by one and all across the nation irrespective of faith, caste, creed, region, or customs. This makes it so very distinctive in nature. Regionally it may differ in ceremonial nature, but its celebration creates the same atmosphere of bonding and togetherness. The spirit of purity and the message of love it sends across are truly mesmerizing. Although there are various stories that may be doing the rounds of this Raksha Bandhan’s origin, one thing is for sure, sibling love is universal, and so is this auspicious day, the Raakhi day.
Did you know?
- Traditional beliefs, passing through generations take us to the Mughal Era. The stories running down centuries state that when the widowed Queen of Chittor, Rani Karnavati was facing a crisis in her kingdom, she sent a Raakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun and sought his protection from the attack of Bahadur Shah of Gujarat. Heeding to her call and paying due respect to the thread that Rani Karnavati had sent him, Emperor Humayun immediately sent his army to Chittor to protect his soul sister.
- It is also mentioned in mythology that during the Mahabharata, when Lord Krishna injured his hand in the battle, Draupadi tore a strip of her sari and tied it on Lord Krishna’s hand to stop it from bleeding. Lord Krishna then declared her as his sister and vowed to always protect her.
- Mythology also mentions that this festival also links Lord Yama (God of Death) and Yamuna (river) as brother and sister in a bond of a string. Yamuna tied Raakhi to Lord Yama and He bestowed immortality upon her in return. That is how they carried out the Raksha Bandhan celebrations, back in the day.
Raksha Bandhan’s Relevance
It is this universality of Raksha Bandhan, that Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore even started a mass movement against the British. Wherein he requested and encouraged Hindu and Muslim women to tie a rakhi on the wrist of men from the other community and make them their brothers in order to combat the divisive policy of the British.
Regardless of the myths and fables linked with the festival, Raksha Bandhan is undeniably a symbol of love. Moreover, it is an occasion celebrated with full enthusiasm and passion by people from all walks of life.
